I’m Caterina Morbiato, a freelance journalist and anthropologist based in Mexico since 2013. I cover stories related to all forms of human diversity, with a particular focus on human rights, social violence, and migration. I worked as a translator and reporter for The Associated Press's Mexico City bureau, where I covered the increase in Chinese migration to Mexico, pioneering drug harm reduction programs, and the charm of a board game born in Mexican prisons nearly a century ago. Before that, I spent seven years as a freelance journalist covering labor rights, culture, migration, and politics in Mexico and El Salvador. During that time, I also worked for two years as the Mexico City correspondent for El Sur, the main newspaper in Guerrero, one of the most challenging and complex Mexican states. I write my stories in Spanish, English, and Italian. My work has been featured in various outlets, including: El País, El Universal, Altaïr Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Jacobin, il manifesto, La Repubblica. I grew up in Italy, gained a better understanding of how the world works in Mexico, and fell in love with journalism in El Salvador. I’m a music addict and couldn’t live without it —punk was not a phase. Send any journalistic inquiries and daring playlists to morbiatocaterina@gmail.com
